The Rules

For at least 1 month, starting on 1 April 2013, we'll shop only in local, independent shops.
  1. By local, we mean shops that are physically based within East Yorkshire.
  2. By independent, we mean shops that are not part of a national chain and are owned by a person, partnership or family (rather than by numerous unrelated shareholders).  Small local chains are allowed.
  3. We won't shop online (Sob!  We're not monsters, you know, we love the internet too.)
  4. The rules apply to ALL our shopping needs - food, clothes, books, presents, booze and household stuff.
  5. We won't shop in any supermarkets, even our beloved Waitrose.
  6. If we eat out, it will be in local & independent restaurants, cafes or bars.  If we're away from home, we must seek out the same in the area we're visiting.  (Trip to London coming up so read the blog to see how it goes!)
  7. Eating with friends is not breaking the rules, even if they haven't shopped local.
  8. We can shop in local markets.
  9. We won't stock up in advance because that feels like cheating but we can make use of any store cupboard ingredients or stuff we already own.
  10. We'll keep a record of how much we spend so that we can report back on how cheap/expensive things are to buy.
  11. We'll do our best not to cheat and promise to confess if we do.
