First stop - Fresh & Fruity on Dyer Lane. Bananas - tick. To be honest, the ones on display were a bit ripe for me as I tend to like them a bit on the green side and when I told the lady, she nipped out the back to see what was on today's delivery for me and I was sorted.
Actually, lots of the displays were looking very tempting today...
So I also grabbed a Melon - a bargain at 50p. It probably wants to be eaten today or tomorrow at the latest but that's OK.
And I think the sunshine was making me feel summery as I also picked up a pineapple. I'm a bit vague on how you tell whether or not they're ripe (one to Google) so that may want a few days in the fruit bowl before eating.
My second stop was Vanessa, the new deli / cafe in Saturday Market. My first time inside and I had a lovely wander. I managed to get my milk there although sadly no full fat so Antony will be enjoying his cereal a little less this week having to make do with semi-skimmed! Turns out the milk is from St Quintin's Creamery in Driffield whose slogan is 'So fresh it's almost embarrasing!'. How can you not love that?
The meat counter looked really appealing (I'll do a separate blog post about Vanessa's soon) and since I wanted something for an evening meal, I grabbed some Lincolnshire sausages and a carrot (talk about pushing the boat out) which I plan to magically transform into a delicious casserole tomorrow. Have faith, it's a little more impressive than it sounds - honest.
But now I have my first food challenge. Where on earth am I going to get tinned tomatoes for my casserole? I have 3 ideas - Jacks in Wednesday Market, maybe Roberts & Speight on Norwood or possibly the greengrocer at Molescroft shops. I'd love to hear any other suggestions and I'll report back once I've tracked them down.
My final port of call was The Bread Shed on Ladygate. Brand, spanking new and gorgeous! I was hoping to pick up some rolls and was in luck. Soft white rolls. Mmmnnnn. How I resisted eating one on the way home is beyond me as my willpower is generally dubious at best. I'll let you know how they taste and will post photos of the bread shop soon.
So, all in all, I think I spent about a tenner and this was my little haul...
Looks good, eh? It feels quite expensive but it's way too early to say anything about comparative costs, especially since I haven't got used to asking for and keeping receipts yet.
It took me about an hour in total including walking into town and home again but I really enjoyed it. Would I have enjoyed it quite so much in the rain? Definitely not. And the bags were petty heavy to carry home so I may have to break out my semi-retired shopping trolley. But I went in 2 completely new shops and had a chat with the staff/owners in each one. Bakery, Grocers and Butcher - almost like going back in time!
