When we're not trying to shop little & local, our normal food shopping week goes something like this....
- Scour our cook books and very many well thumbed copies of Olive Magazine for things we'd like to eat
- Write a list
- Go to the supermarket (sometimes stopping at the greengrocer on the way if we have time)
- If we've forgotten anything or want something else, hopefully find it somewhere in town
- Go to the bread stall on a Wednesday
We typically spend anywhere between £60 and £90 a week which includes cleaning products, toiletries etc.
So, as far as possible, we're going to try and stick to our routine of writing a list for the week. We really want to know whether it's possible to get the stuff we'd normally buy and if so, how much it will cost. But on the other hand, we're not going to go all evangelical about it. We DEFINITELY don't have time to shop every day. We really don't want to eat dull food. But we do want to take advantage of great buys and lovely looking stuff we might not have considered before. So here's the plan...
- We'll write our list as usual
- We'll try to shop 2 or maybe 3 times a week but definitely no more
- We'll try to tie shopping in with the rest of our routine - for example, picking things up on the way in to work in the morning
- When we can't find the ingredients on our list, we'll see what inspires us and cook that instead
- If something looks complete irresistible in the shops, we'll ditch a meal from the list and buy that instead
We normally shop on a Friday so that we've got a fridge full of good stuff for the weekend. I went on Good Friday and stocked up so we haven't really done any proper shopping as yet. Planning my first foray today so will post how I get on.
